Bird Spikes: Why They Work to Deter Nuisance Birds
Bird spikes are easy to install, inexpensive to purchase, and require very little maintenance. Why do bird spikes work? How exactly do they keep birds from landing on or around your business? Here is what you need to know about this amazing bird deterrent.
What Are Bird Spikes?
Bird spikes come in a variety of sizes and styles, but they all essentially work in the same way. Bird spikes are narrow strips of spikes that can be attached to eaves, roofs, window sills, and anywhere else large birds land or congregate. Because they have glue tracks and screw holes, the spikes can safely be attached to almost any surface including wood or concrete.
At Globofix, we offer plastic and stainless steel bird spikes. While both plastic and steel spikes work the same way (they make it difficult or impossible for a bird to land or walk in the area with spikes), steel spikes offer a few unique benefits. Not only are they less visible and blend in with a building’s architecture better than plastic spikes, steel spikes also come with a longer guarantee and are able to withstand hot temperatures and direct sunlight. The strips of spikes come in 3-, 5-, and 7-inch lengths and can be attached end-to-end to cover any desired length.
Why Do They Work?
If installed correctly, bird spikes will prevent larger birds from being able to land anywhere on or around your business (or the specific problem areas). Larger bird species such as gulls, pigeons, and crows all have large feet that are designed more for walking than for clutching. Due to the size of their feet, these birds need quite a bit of space to land and maneuver once they have landed. Bird spikes block and cover the areas the birds can land and walk around, effectively making it impossible for them to get anywhere near your business.
It’s important to note that some smaller species of birds such as starlings and sparrows will not be permanently deterred if you use bird spikes alone. This is mostly true when the birds are nesting or mating. Tiny birds use their feet to clutch branches, cables, and other objects. Birds that are small enough can still clutch the edge of a building or even the spikes themselves if necessary. Further, many small birds will build a nest around the actual spikes, eventually covering them up. While this is not true for all species and only happens in rare instances, by using other deterrents, such as electric tracks, you are sure to eliminate any bird problem you face.
Are They Safe?
Just because you want to eliminate a bird problem from around your business doesn’t mean you want to see all of the birds suffer. Luckily, bird spikes are humane, safe, and environmentally friendly. The spikes themselves are designed to make it difficult for birds to land without causing any actual harm or injury.
Both our stainless steel and plastic spikes are safe for the environment and will last up to 10 years or more before needing to be replaced.
Put Them to Work
Whether you own a warehouse or a condo complex, a restaurant or a shipping facility, birds can be a huge problem. They carry diseases, make a mess with their waste and droppings, and can prove distracting to customers or employees alike.
Luckily, fixing the problem is often as easy as installing bird spikes wherever birds gather around your business. If you have a bird problem, bird spikes are a humane solution that you have been searching for.
